WILLIAM JOSEPH KACHINJIKA
William Joseph Kachinjika weaves discarded materials including ropes, cloth, tobacco twine, WiFi cables and USB cables to create large sculptures that mirror the challenges and resilience of his community. Born in Mbare, Harare in 1999, he carefully observed and drew inspiration from his grandmother, who experimented with different weaving techniques, colours and textures and adopted a similar approach into his artistic practice.
Kachinjika’s work addresses current challenges faced by his community such as the sporadic availability of electricity. His choice of materials is linked to the conceptual themes he explores. His series about electricity black outs not only addresses the literal lack of power but also highlights the broader social issue of citizen disempowerment. In Zimbabwe, only about 40% of the population has consistent access to electricity, underscoring a severe inequality that permeates the fabric of society.
